dissaembled back strap loom
In the small community we found the last woman that knew haow to spin and weave, however due to arthritis she was no longer able to work the loom. She did show me the loom and the last piece she had woven. She still wore the black wrap skirt but the blouse and belt were no longer used. Her sons had migrated to the US to work and she was living a very meager existence. We talked for a while and since it was very close to "todo Santos" or “day of the dead" I gave her some money to buy marigolds and some candles. There are times when I can not help seeing beyond the cultural richness and feel the difficulty and poverty , this was one of those cases.
