Totolinga, Los Reyes, Veracruz, Mexico this fall ridge top now was speaking village has a costume that marries from the surrounding area in that there is an embroidered muslin blouse which is distinct from the lace top blouses worn in the surrounding area. I did notice this and a few other villages including Cuacaballo, Los Reyes and Amatitla in the municipality of Zongolica. On my first visit here during the month of February 2006 the town schoolteacher urged the children to go home and change into their traditional costume. When we first arrived there only one girl was dressed in traditional costume, had it been Friday, all the girls would have been wearing traditional dress. The picture of the schoolgirls in their traditional costume is one of my favorites.
In the beginning of March there is a celebration called xochicali the ceremony is performed in a cave or other sacred locations like springs and people ask for permission from the earth to plant and harvest and ask forgiveness for any damage they may have done. I initially believe that this celebration was done by the healers in the towns however the professor here in Totolinga explained to me that many older generations still go to the caves or to the springs to leave offerings and to pray. |
