| During my visit to Yaitepec and spending time talking and buying some blouses, the family brought out thier daughter dressed in her traditional costume. She was happy to pose for me, twriling and spinning. Her parents and aunts were really amused. Not shown is her small rifle. I returned a year later with her picture, my friend Pat and I got caught in the middle of a gun fight on the way into the village. It was between militants and the judicial police, 1 dead and two wounded. The atmosphere was very different with heavily armed police standing guard in the center of town. I arrived there after walking for three days from Ocotlan to Juquilla on a pilgrimage to visit the Virgin of Juquilla. Iwnt to Yaitepec to buy a costume for my collection and after persistent requests for the finest blouses they had, a group of 6 blouses were brought out. The blouses were spread out on a table and as I was looking at them a group of 7 women came into the store, they all walked by the blouses and looking at them and commenting in Chatino. Each women touched this blouse, later one of them told me it was the favorite of all the ladies. |
