Driving to Aldama, we saw a small town perched on a pine-covered hillside only several kms past San Andres. This is the Tzotzil village of Santiago El Pinar. We never visited the town, but were introduced to an elderly couple from there while we were in San Andres. The wife was dressed in a huipil similar to the one above. Santiago El Pinar used to be part of the Municipio of San Andres, but the government divided San Andres Municipio into several smaller ones in 1999 in an attempt to take power away from the Zapatistas who hold San Andres. Most of the people in Santiago El Pinar support the national government, rather than the EZLN. At one time, a large paramilitary encampment was located in this area. |
