Aguacatenango is a small Tzeltal community that borders the famous ceramic-producing village of Amatenango del Valle. Aguacatenango is a part of the Municipio of Venustiano Carranza. Nearby, is the Protestant “colonia” of Monte de Los Olivos; established by Maya Protestants who have left Aguacatenango because of religious conflict.
Aguacatenango is famous for producing embroidered blouses the blouses are worn by women in the village and also produced for the commercial market. The commercial blouses feature the same large satin-stitched flowers that appear on the traditional blouses. However, different colors may be used for commercial embroidery such as white flowers on white fabric and the blouses lack some of the embroidered detailing found on blouses produced for domestic use. Long-sleeved blouses are produced for sale, but traditional blouses have short sleeves. Women selling blouses from Aguacatenango are a familiar sight walking the streets of San Cristobal, and blouses from Aguacatenango are sold in markets and shops in many places far away from Chiapas.
Along with the embroidered blouses, local women wear indigo skirts and red sashes.
There is also a workshop in Aguacatenango that weaves wool rugs for the artesania market.
