Purenchecuaro, Michoacan has grown a lot since my last visit in 2001. When I first visited this town in 2001, the church was under reconstruction because the roof had collapsed, right after a mass. The community had come together and was working on the reconstruction. By this visit in August 2005, the repair of the church was finished and the town had been completely paved.
In 2001, we saw some of the finest embroidery in the lake region. I found this woman in her store and she broke out her finest blouses and delantal for the pictures. This year I returned to the same store. The store owner, Gracia Palles Contreras and her husband told me that they go to visit their children in the US twice a year. She was very happy to show me her stunning blouses and delantal. I suggested that she put them on for the pictures and she agreed. The street paving and general orderliness of these P’urhépechas village is admirable. It is nice to see the people in the community work together for a common good.
