Huazolotitlan is medium sized Mixtec town near Pinotpea Nacional, Oaxaca.Day to day use of the huipil is rare here. When women marry they save thier huipil to be buried in. There is an active weaving industry here and many huipils are made for the handicrafts markets of Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido. Huazolotitlan is medium sized Mixtec town near Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. On a visit there in 1995 it was obvious that the textile tradition was disappearing. The example in the second frame was purchased in 1974 during a trip to the coast. It has some Mixtec words embroidered on it. The weaver told me it meant that she was from Huazolotitlan. The second example is supposed to be a Coyuche cotton huipil. Coyuche cotton is naturally occurring tan colored cotton. One of the characteristics of garments woven with that type of hand spun cotton is the thickness of the thread and on close examination variegation of thread color. The threads in this garment are too consistently tan for me to say it is Coyuche. Ok so what did I know in 1974?
