El Grande is one of many small villages in the Mixteca Alta region that maintains a weaving tradition. The wool is eniterly prepared by hand than then woven into these ward ponchos. El Grande is located a few kilometers from Chalcatongo in land from Tlaxiaco Oaxaca In this region the weather can be cool due to the altitude and wool sarapes are common for men. Women use rebosos. The wool is handspun and then woven on a back strap loom. A close up of the herringbone weave and the center of the sarapes where the two panels are joined.
