Pantepec is a Totanaca / Otomi town that has left its textile traditions behind. On a visit there looking for textiles in 1994, the town was very modern and orderly with no textiles visible. At the mayors office they directed me to the Mateos family. I was lucky to find a complete costume that they were willing to sell.

Pantepec is located inland from Xicotepec Puebla. In 1994 the road was a very slow drive due to many rocks; we also had to cross a river. I was actually charged a toll to drive about 5 mph down the road for 1.5 hours.

Pantepec is located on top of a hill; the town was clean and orderly. The president’s (mayor) office was of help directing me to Anna Maria Mateos. 		anamariamateo
