Pantepec is a Totanaca / Otomi town that has left its textile traditions behind. On a visit there looking for textiles in 1994, the town was very modern and orderly with no textiles visible. At the mayors office they directed me to the Mateos family. I was lucky to find a complete costume that they were willing to sell.

Pantepec is located inland from Xicotepec Puebla. In 1994 the road was a very slow drive due to many rocks; we also had to cross a river. I was actually charged a toll to drive about 5 mph down the road for 1.5 hours.

Pantepec is located on top of a hill; the town was clean and orderly. The president’s (mayor) office was of help directing me to Anna Maria Mateos.

This quechquemitl is now extinct. There may be some that are worn during celebration but none were visible during my visit.
