According to the last census there are only 300 Cucapas left in Mexico. There is limited ability to speak the language although there are a few bi lingual school attempting to revive the it. The Cucapa are the original inhabitants of the northern part of Mexico, streching between the US border near Calexico and the Sea of Cortez. Traditionally hunt gatherers and fishermean they have been gradually reduce to 5 villages. The traditional costume is worn for festivals, ceremonies and for burial. Bead work is an introduced craft that helps the Cucapa econoomiclly.
