The internet is a new medium for study and resource development. In the past, as people developed books and eventually printed them, the process of revising them and updating was very difficult. Important works would sit on library shelves and few people would be able to see them and use the accumulated knowledge in them. Today all that has changes, now with the World Wide Web, our ability to share and study a broad assortment of issues and topics. Initially the Web site www.mexicantextiles.com displayed textiles from my collection. However, it soon became clear, that the amount of cultural and textile information that I had accumulated to document the collection needed to be presented in an educational format. The web was the perfect media for this because the presentation of the textiles and cultural information could be incremental and graphical. Since then, the project develops information about the textiles from specific indigenous groups by field study. This information is then developed, edited and included in the web site. The purchase of textiles has been limited, to allow the limited resources available to be focus on documentation of the actual state of Mexican indigenous textiles. Currently as project director I does all the development to make this an exceptional site were people could learn about Mexican textiles and the indigenous peoples that use them. My efforts include: all the research field study of the villages, village and textile photography, graphics editing, text and research, documentation, web gallery creation, web pages development and web site maintenance. Two volunteer editors that help on occasion to fix the text affected by my dyslexia. In December 2003, I was given project status at the Hygeia Foundation for Hygeia Foundation for Health, Science and the Environment, Inc. of New York City, this will allow me to raise funds to expand the web site and cover costs of investigation and material needed to promote the web site. The need for fundraising and expanding to a larger audience has also created a greater emphasis on web rating and search engines optimization and marketing. In 2004, I receive one donation from Webdaki designs for assistance in the web sites development Currently over 15000 visitors a month enter the web site. Like most sites , some stay and many go, however it is here as a resource for those that are interested in study of the textiles and as a memorial to the indigenous peoples of Mexico. |
